If you’ve ever wondered why most phonics programs start with s, a, t, p, i, n, it’s not random.
These six letter sounds are chosen because once a child knows them, they can already start reading simple words, through blending.
sat
pin
tap
sit
pit
tin
Real Blending. Real words. Real reading.
What is blending in phonics?
Blending is the skill children use to read. It's the ability to take individual sounds and push them together to form a word.
sss… a… t → sat
p… i… n → pin
This is how children move from knowing sounds to actually reading.
Why these letters first? (s, a, t, p, i, n)
These sounds are introduced first because they allow children to quickly form a small range of VC (vowel consonant) and CVC (consonant vowel consonant) words that they are able to read.
VC words: at, it
CVC words: sat, pin, tap, sit
This early success is intentional.
It introduces blending straight away and helps children build confidence quickly.
Why children struggle with reading
Many children are taught:
the alphabet song
letter names (A, B, C)
to guess words from pictures
But reading isn’t about memorising or guessing.
It’s about:👉 recognising letter sounds👉 blending them together.
Without blending children can know their sounds and still not read.
How to help your child start reading
Keep it simple:
Focus on letter sounds, not names
Start with simple VC and CVC words
Practise blending daily
Keep it short and consistent
This is how reading starts to click.
The goal of early phonics
You’re not trying to teach everything at once.
You’re helping your child understand:
letters represent sounds
sounds can be blended
blending creates words
That’s the foundation of reading.
A Simple Way to Get Started
If you’re unsure where to start or what order to teach sounds in, that’s completely normal.
That’s exactly why I created a parent-led phonics program—so you can support your child at home with clear, simple steps, without needing a teaching background.
